CITY OF MESA FIREFIGHTER-RECRUIT TESTING PROCESS - 2007

Thank you for your interest in employment as a Firefighter-Recruit with the Mesa Fire Department. The City of Mesa respects, values, and welcomes diversity in our workplace. To this end, we encourage all interested people to apply. Please read this testing process information carefully, use it as a checklist, and keep a copy to refer to during the testing process.

APPLICATION PROCESS

STEP 1: Meet Minimum Qualifications By Thursday, August 9, 2007

  • 18 years of age.
     
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • STEP 2: Apply In-Person (Or Submit An On-line Application or By Mail)

  • Apply in-person at Mesa Fire Station 201, at 360 E. 1st St., Mesa, AZ  85201. Use West entrance.
    • Weekdays only, Wednesday, August 1, 2007 – Thursday, August 9, 2007
      8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Arizona time).

      Please park on Pomeroy, south of 1st. Street.
       
    • If you apply in person you will pick up a Written Exam Preparation Manual at that time; otherwise it will be mailed to you on Friday, August 10, 2007.
    • Please note: We reserve the right to close the recruitment once 1,200 applications have been received. Therefore, we encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible.

      • Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at 12:00 a.m. – Thursday, August 9, 2007, at 11:59 p.m. (Arizona time) or until 1,200 applications have been received, whichever comes first.

      • If you apply by mail and your application is received by the close date, we will mail you a Written Exam Preparation Manual on Friday, August 10, 2007.
         
    • Must Include Your Unique E-Mail Address.
       
      • You must have a unique e-mail address to register, check test results, and receive information during the entire testing process.
         
      • Two people cannot use the same e-mail address to apply on-line for Firefighter-Recruit or the system will overwrite the first application for the same position title if an additional application is submitted.

  • Request For Preference Points
     
  • Go to http://www.cityofmesa.org/jobs/pdf/fm144a.pdf to print the Request Form and bring it with you to the Firefighter-Recruit Written Exam with the required documentation. Late submissions will not be accepted.
     
  • For a qualified veteran, disabled veteran, veteran’s spouse or surviving spouse, and disabled person.
     
  • Added to Written Exam score that is first passing without the preference points.
  • STEP 3: Register On-Line For The Written Exam

    • Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at 12:00 a.m. – Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 11:59 p.m. (Arizona time).

      You will receive an Applicant ID at the e-mail address you provided in your application within 2 business days of submitting your application.

      You will use your e-mail address and Applicant ID to register.

      Test registrations will be cancelled if you do not meet the minimum qualifications or qualify for testing.
       
    • A confirmation e-mail will be sent to you by Friday, August 24, 2007, 5:00 p.m. (Arizona time) from humanresources@cityofmesa.org; you may need to adjust your spam blocker to ensure that you receive these e-mails.
  • Request For Reasonable Accommodation Of Disability:

  • STEP 4 - Recommended: Attend The Mesa Firefighter-Recruit Open House

  •  8:30 – Discussion with Fire Senior Staff Member,
     8:45 – Introduction to the Mesa Fire Department;
     9:30 – Preview and Tour of the Mesa Public Safety Training Academy;
    11:00 – Preview of Fire Promotional Opportunities;
    12:00 - Lunch Break,
     1:00 – Preview of the City of Mesa Benefits;
     2:00 Explanation of the Firefighter-Recruit Testing Process and Discussion.
     
  • Join us for all or any sessions and bring a family member or friend (age of 12 and older). Participation in the Open House is encouraged, and reservations are requested for but not required.
     
  • TESTING PROCESS

    STEP 1: Prepare For The Written Exam

  • Use the Written Exam Preparation Manual as your study guide for the Written Exam. Approximately 75% of the questions on the Written Exam come from the Written Exam Preparation Manual. The remaining approximately 25% of the exam may consist of mathematical reasoning, mechanical aptitude, spatial rotation, reading charts, and vocabulary.
     
  • Does not require firefighting experience.
  • STEP 2: Take The Written Exam

  • Friday, September 28, 2007 through Monday, October 1, 2007, morning and afternoon sessions, based on total number of applicants, times to be scheduled.
  • Bring official state government photo ID such as Driver’s License or State ID Card, federal government photo ID such as passport or visa, or U.S. military photo ID. Please allow sufficient time for travel and parking.
     
  • Will be scored off-site and the results will be posted on-line by City of Mesa Applicant ID on Friday, October 12, 2007, 5:00 p.m. (Arizona time).
     
  • If you pass the Written Exam, you will be placed on the List of Eligible Applicants, which will be effective for six months and may be extended.
     
  • From the Written Exam scores, the most qualified applicants will be invited to the Interview.
  • STEP 3: Obtain a CPAT Certification Prior To First Interview

  • The City of Mesa Fire Department will not be conducting a CPAT.  If you are invited to the first interview, you are required to have passed a CPAT from a CPAT Licensee between November 5, 2006 and November 4, 2007. We will provide you with an authorization form to submit at the interview with all information needed for the City of Mesa to verify your CPAT result with the Licensee. To continue in the testing process, the CPAT Licensee must then verify your CPAT result.

    If you passed the CPAT with the City of Mesa Fire Department in December 2006, please contact Captain Jeff Stieber at 480-644-5560 to confirm that your result is on record.

  • STEP 4: Participate In The First Interview

  • Monday, November 5, 2007 through Friday, November 9, 2007, based on total number of applicants, times to be scheduled.
     
  • Location to be determined.
     
  • Panel interview with sworn Fire Human Resources.
  • STEP 5 - Recommended: Intern Orientation

  • Saturdays, December 1, 8, 15, and 22, 2007. Participation is encouraged.
     
  • Mesa Public Safety Training Facility at 3260 N. 40th Street, Mesa, AZ 85215.
  • STEP 6: Selection Interview

  • Most qualified applicants will be invited to a selection interview with sworn Fire Human Resources
     
  • January 2008. Dates and times to be determined.
  • Selection And Clearance Process

  • Employment and certification verification and reference checking.
     
  • Selections made by the Fire Chief, with the approval of the City Manager. Conditional offers made by Fire Department.
     
  • Current CPR Professional-level certification by date of conditional offer and maintain current through Firefighter-Recruit Academy.
     
  • Current state of Arizona or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification by date of conditional offer and maintain current through completion of the Firefighter-Recruit Academy; OR current State of Arizona or National Registry Paramedic certification by date of conditional offer and maintain current through completion of the Firefighter-Recruit Academy, and current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification by date of conditional offer and maintain through Firefighter-Recruit Academy.
     
  • Offers confirmed after successful completion of the fingerprint clearance, driving record check, physical including drug screen, and Public Safety Human Resources Retirement System review.
