Strategic Goals of the Utilities Department

Develop our Human Resources

We will educate, train, and develop our employees, our most important asset, to enable them to excel at their jobs, be knowledgeable of the Utilities business and be prepared for future opportunities. We will give our employees the opportunity to share their knowledge with others, and empower them to provide the best customer service possible.

Develop and Enhance Communications

We will communicate with our customers, council, and employees to ensure they are well educated, informed, and proud of the products and services we provide. We will communicate with our customers to help them understand where their utilities come from, how they are delivered throughout the City, and that the products and services we provide are safe. We will provide information to Council members to help them understand the issues affecting our utilities, the delivery of our products and services, and the contribution of Mesa utilities revenues to the City's budget. We will educate our employees so they understand what we do and can confidently communicate this to others within the City and to our customers. We will ensure our customers, council, and employees know where to get detailed information.

Improve Work Processes and Practices

We will use technology as a key component for improving work processes and practices. We will increase the accessibility and use of technology within the Department and evaluate use of the best available technologies. We will continue to improve our wok processes and management practices through our continued commitment to the Department's Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) efforts.

Manage Regulatory Issues

We will be nationally recognized as a leading utility by being actively involved in professional organizations. We will be active members of all national organizations which we believe are influential in shaping industry direction and policies and participate in legislation and regulatory proceedings regarding water, wastewater, natural gas and electric energy to ensure good science and sound economic data are the basis for all regulation. We will commit our people and organization to comply with all regulations applying to our business.

Improve Products and Services

We will, with citizen and council involvement and support, expand and improve the services and products we provide. We will add additional services whenever market conditions warrant, in order to provide customer choice at a competitive price. We will explore all possibilities to enhance customer service, including partnerships with the private sector, while maintaining a reasonable return to the City of Mesa.

Improve Employee Safety

We will provide the training, education and resources necessary to promote a safe working environment for our employees. We will ensure employees, individually and as team members, are trained in safe work practices. We will continue to pursue our goal of no lost time accidents. We will promote working safely as the number one priority of the Utilities Department. We will ensure each employee considers safety to be their responsibility and encourages and assists others in practicing safe working methods on the job.
