Emergency Radio Communications System Upgrade
District: All
Location: City Wide
Project Description: The current 800 MHz
emergency radio communications system has been in
service since 1998, with the most recent system
upgrade in 2007. The Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) has restricted the access to the
800 MHz system, requiring the City to seek expansion
in the 700 MHz system. In order to be FCC compliant,
the City is required to provide ongoing life-cycle
maintenance and upgrades to voice, mobile data,
telephone, computer, and
high-speed data exchange to ensure interoperability
among public safety personnel within and outside the
City of Mesa city limits. Expandability of the
current system is also required to respond to the
current and future communications needs of the City.
Expandability components
include: infrastructure upgrades such as an
additional transmitter site, base stations and
ancillary equipment to accommodate life-cycle
maintenance, including new radio frequencies to
improve the radio communication quality for wide
area coverage. Replacement of the mobile data system
is required due to the notification from the current
communications system manufacturer that they will no
longer support the current system as of 2012.
Replacement of the mobile data system
will include software applications in response to
technology improvements as
well as technical support of applications by the
software manufacturers.
