Project Description:
The City's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) uses technology
to make the most of the physical street system. It includes a
central computer system to control and coordinate traffic signals,
gather traffic volume information and monitor traffic conditions via
closed circuit television (CCTV). The City is in the process of
converting all of the traffic signals from an old control system that
uses limited capacity leased phone lines to the new ICONS control
system using fiber optic communication lines capable of
supporting the advanced control and monitoring functions now
available. This project includes several sub-projects that will
install fiber optic communication lines in various areas of the City
facilitating conversion of signals to the ICONS control system. It
will also install additional traffic detectors and cameras to expand
the system's coverage.
