Pantera Fire
On August 18th, 2005 a fire
broke out in a newly constructed home on Pantera Ave. with a
lightweight roof. Lightweight construction is commonly used in
this part of the country. The Mesa Fire Department learned
several important lessons from this fire:
-
First, the Pantera incident emphasized
the importance of a thorough initial size-up as well as
choosing the appropriate strategy (offensive vs. defensive).
-
It also stresses the importance of
staying together in an IDLH environment and maintaining
accountability throughout an incident. In low
visibility conditions, it may be necessary to maintain
physical contact with each other to insure effective
accountability. We go in together, we come out
together!
-
The Pantera Fire also reminded us that
Company Officers must avoid task level functions and focus
on directing the attack, calling for subsequent resources
and maintaining effective communications with command.
