Physical Fitness

Mesa Police Academy

Becoming a Police Officer for the Mesa Police Department has many challenges.  One challenge is personal fitness.  Whether you are a candidate or recruit, being physically prepared will assist with your performance during the testing process and in the academy.

Personal Fitness PhotoPhysical conditioning is stressed because of the physical demands placed upon Officers in the field.  As a part of the Police Officer Recruit selection process you will be required to meet established Cooper Standards.  Each event must be successfully completed in order to pass the test. The following is a list of the minimum requirements to successfully complete the Cooper Standards Assessment.

  • Push-Ups---18 within one minute

  • Sit-ups---27 within one minute

  • 1-1/2 mile run---within 15 minutes and 20 seconds

Once in the Academy as a new recruit, you will be required to perform physically at much higher levels.  Now is an important time to initiate a regular fitness program.  Keep in mind some exercises which are a part of the physical fitness program for Police Recruits include, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and running.

Once you have been placed on an eligibility list you may take the physical agility test as many times as you like. The test is offered every Tuesday at the Mesa Police Department Training Facility. Once you have passed the test, you have fulfilled the testing requirements for this portion of the application process. You will be notified of dates available once you have been placed on an eligibility list.

Preparing mentally and physically for the Police Officer Recruit academy now can only assist you in successfully meeting the physical demands of the training required by the Training Staff.

Note: Applicants must successfully complete a physical performance examination in order for the Hiring Unit to begin the background investigation phase of testing.
