Police Officer Recruit

Salary Range for Police Officer Recruit is $48,401.60 to $68,744.00
Within 12 months your Pay increases 10% to $53,518.40

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience: Requires graduation from high school or GED. Completion of college-level courses in criminal justice is desirable.

Age: At least 21 years of age by graduation from Police Academy.  No upper age limit.

Vision: As outlined by AZ P.O.S.T., vision is acceptable if it is 20/20 uncorrected or 20/20 or better corrected by glasses. If vision is uncorrected at 20/80 or better, and can be corrected to 20/20 by use of glasses or hard contacts, it is acceptable. If vision is uncorrected at 20/200, it must be corrected to 20/20 with soft contacts. An eye examination by an optometrist of the City's choice will be required prior to appointment. Radial keratotomy may be accepted once visual acuity is stabilized.

License: Must possess an Arizona Class D Driver's License by hire date.  No license or registration suspensions within the last 3 years from the date of reinstatement from the suspension. 

Citizenship: Applicants must be United States citizens.

Bilingual Skills: (English/Spanish) are highly desirable.

Qualified applicants will not have any felony convictions or a dishonorable discharge from military service. Applicants must meet AZ P.O.S.T. drug standards at the time of testing. Applicants must have no felony conviction or be under indictment for any felony in any state or jurisdiction. Due to the nature of the position, driving is required to perform the duties of a Police Officer. Factors which
could prohibit a candidate from moving forward in the testing process include: loss of license due to driving violation points or two chargeable accidents within the previous 36 months, or a DUI conviction within the previous 36 months.

Police Officers are required to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.

Steps in the Police Officer Recruit Testing Process

Bring in a completed application to the testing site. No appointment required. A notary for application will be provided at the test site.

Prescreen of application for minimum qualifications
This is done at the test site immediately preceding the written test.
Meets Qualifications
Applicant will be invited to take the written test.
Does Not Meet Qualifications
Applicant will be notified of the reason/s they do not meet qualifications.
Written Test
Applicant will be asked to complete a written communication test which takes 40 minutes, as well as a 169 question multiple-choice exam, which takes an additional two hours. Applicant must receive a score of 70% or better to continue in the process.
Pass with 70% or Better
Applicant will be notified of their score upon completion of the exam and then scheduled for a selection interview. Usually the interview will be later the same day.
Score below 70%
Applicant will be given their score and then advised of the next test date they would be eligible to test again. The applicant is encouraged to attend our Police Officer Recruit Workshop.
Selection Interview
This is a structured job interview conducted by two officers. The officers score the answer to each questions. Again, receive a total score of 70% or better on the entire interview to continue in the process.
Pass with 70% or Better
The applicant will be notified of their score upon completion of the interview. This places the applicant on an eligible list which is valid for one year from the date of the written test. The applicant is then scheduled for the physical assessment exam.
Score below 70%
The applicant is notified they did not pass the interview and encouraged to start the process over on a future test date. The applicant is encouraged to attend our Police Officer Recruit Workshop.
Physical Assessment
This assessment consists of pushups in one minute, sit-ups in one minute, and 1.5 mile run. Passing scores for this assessment are 18 pushups or more, 27 sit-ups or more, and then run in under 15 minutes and 20 seconds. The applicant must achieve passing scores on each exercise to move to the next step in the process.
Pass all exercises
Applicant will be scheduled for a background interview with an officer.
Does not pass one or more exercises
Applicant will be requested to come back and retake the assessment. The physical assessment test is offered every week. The applicant can retake the physical assessment as many times as needed in order to pass.
Background Investigation
This phase includes:
  • Interview with an officer
  • Polygraph exam
  • All information is verified through criminal checks, employer checks, personal references and credit checks.
Acceptable
The file is sent to the Hiring Board for review.
Disqualified
Applicant will be notified by letter and will be given a time frame needed before they will be able to retest with this department.
Hiring Board
This is a board which consists of a background investigator, hiring sergeant, human resources lieutenant, legal advisor and staff resources commander. Each person will have a recommendation on each applicant with final approval being held by the staff resources commander.
Acceptable
Applicant will be placed in an acceptable category and will be considered when filling the next academy positions. Applicant will be notified by letter.
Unacceptable
Applicant will be notified by letter and will be given a time frame needed before they will be able to retest with this department.
Conditional Offer of Employment
If an applicant is found acceptable through the Hiring Board, they may be offered a conditional offer of employment. The recruit officer position is contingent upon the applicant passing both the medical and psychological exams.
Pass both exams
Applicant will be given a start date and an academy date.
Not pass one or both exams
Applicant will be notified by letter of the results of the exams. Applicant will have to wait at least one year from the time they were notified to start the process again.
