Collect Call Scam
There is a new collect call scam that is really a form of identity theft.
Many of the calls occur late at night. The caller claims to be calling from a
hospital or some other emergency situation. The caller states that it is a
collect call, and once the consumer accepts the charges, the caller comes on the
line posing as the operator.
The caller then states that they need a credit card number or calling card
number and PIN for the call to be billed. Once that information is provided, the
caller hangs up and uses the information or sells it to others.
Be careful when giving out personal information over the telephone, these
callers rely on getting you off-balance by calling late at night.
