Mesa Police Department Cons, Frauds & Scams
Do Not Call List (Telemarketing Scams)
August 2003 - Beware of a scam involving the Do Not Call
list. People are receiving calls or e-mails from people claiming to represent
the AZ Attorney General's Office or the Arizona Federal Trade Commission (which
doesn't exist). They ask people to put their name on the list and verify their
name, address and phone number and then they ask for the name and routing code
of their bank. Please do not give out any personal information over the
telephone. No one should be calling your about registering for the Do Not Call
list.
June 2003 - Apparently someone has set up Web sites claiming that they can
pre-register people for the national Do Not Call list. Obviously this is a good
way to obtain personal information from people. The only Web site that is
legitimate for registering for the Do Not Call list is www.ftc.gov.
Beware of a new telemarketing scam: the caller claims to be from the
Do-Not-Call registry or some other anti-fraud group and asks if you want
to be put on your state's Do-Not-Call list. They begin to ask you for
personal information, such as Social Security Number, credit card
information, etc. You should not receive a call from such a registry.
You, the consumer, should initiate signing up for the Do-Not-Call list.
In fact, Arizona does not have such a list; so don't be fooled.
