Burglary Suspects Captured by Mesa Police
An alert Mesa Police patrol Sergeant is
responsible for the arrest of three Mesa residents
linked to a commercial burglary in the area of
Greenfield and McDowell. The investigation revealed
that these suspects might also be involved in
numerous other burglaries in various local
municipalities.
The story begins on
December 14, 2007 at 3:00 a.m. in north Mesa. A
uniformed patrol Sergeant was conducting pro-active
patrol near Greenfield and McDowell in response to
commercial burglaries that had been reported in the
area during previous weeks. The Sergeant noticed a
suspicious vehicle parked in the parking lot of a
commercial business complex. Upon further
investigation the Sergeant contacted the occupant of
the vehicle who was identified as 41-year-old
Michael Riley of Mesa. Riley had no reasonable
explanation for being parked in an industrial
complex at 3:00 a.m.
Additional uniformed
patrol officers responded to the scene and checked
the area for signs of a burglary. One officer was
able to locate a business in the immediate area with
a broken window. Investigators discovered that this
particular business had just been burglarized and
that a computer was missing from inside. An
immediate check of the business and surrounding area
for suspects produced negative results. Further
investigation was conducted and solid investigative
leads were established.
Later that morning at approximately 9:40 a.m. a
witness contacted the Mesa Police Department to
report suspicious activity in the area of Greenfield
and McDowell. A witness saw two males later
identified as 45-year-old Shane Sullins and 28-year
old Bryan Kennedy, both of Mesa placing what
appeared to be a computer in the trunk of their car.
Kennedy and Sullins retrieved the computer from
behind a trash dumpster near a commercial business
complex. Investigators traced the vehicle back to a
Mesa residence in the area of 4600 E. Caballero,
which coincided with information previously gathered
by investigators who were originally assigned to
this case.
Investigators immediately responded to the
residence on Caballero where they found Kennedy and
Sullins inside. Items of evidence related to the
commercial burglary investigated earlier that
morning were located in the residence. Other items
directly related to other burglaries in the east
valley were also found. Investigators are still in
the process of sorting through items of evidence
that may be linked to other burglaries.
As a result of this investigation Shane Sullins
was booked on suspicion of burglary. Bryan Kennedy
was booked on suspicion of possession of stolen
property and false reporting to a law enforcement
agency. Michael Riley is facing charges of
possession of drug paraphernalia. Additional charges
are pending the results of further investigation. As
of this writing bond amounts and release status are
unknown.
