Suspect stabs roommate in jealous rage
Mesa Police arrested 44-year-old Mesa resident
Artemio Galindo Basoco late Wednesday evening on
suspicion of aggravated assault after he allegedly
stabbed his roommate and then swung the knife at a
juvenile.
Police received a 9-1-1 call from a 14-year-old
female alleging that Basoco had just stabbed his
roommate, 41-year-old Marcelo Reyes Corona and then
swung the knife at her after she attempted to stop
him. The incident occurred at a residence located at
235 W. Southern Avenue.
Corona suffered at least three stab wounds to his
arms and upper torso. Corona received medical
attention at the scene
and
was transported to a local hospital for life
threatening injuries. He is currently listed in
critical condition. Investigators learned that the
involved parties reside together. Basoco remained at
the scene until police arrived and immediately told
investigators that he had stabbed Corona because he
was "tired of his ways." During a post-Miranda
interview, Basoco stated that he was jealous of
Corona because Basoco's 38-year-old girlfriend had
been cooking Corona dinner and cleaning his room.
Basoco admitted to swinging the knife at the
14-year-old victim after she tried to stop him from
stabbing Corona. According to investigators, Basoco
showed no remorse for stabbing Corona, and he spoke
with rage and anger as he expressed his feelings
about the incident. Investigators believe that
alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
Basoco was booked on two counts of aggravated
assault with a deadly weapon (domestic violence). In
Arizona, the domestic violence laws pertain to
anyone who lives or has lived together in the past.
