Mesa Police Department - Media Release
Photo enforcement to begin at Rhodes Junior High
School
The City of Mesa, Mesa Police Department and
American Traffic Solutions, Inc. (ATS) have joined
together to improve the safety for students, faculty
and community members in the Rhodes Junior High
corridor on West Baseline Road in Mesa.
The installation of the photo enforcement
equipment between Pennington and Longmore has been
completed. The photo enforcement system at Rhodes
Junior High School is the first mid-block speed
camera in Mesa. The cameras will capture speeding
violations that occur while the school zone lights
are flashing with a reduced speed limit of 35 miles-per-hour and during non-school time periods with a
speed limit of 45 miles-per-hour. The photo
enforcement system will monitor traffic in both
directions of travel. The speed detection technology
in the system is synchronized with the flashing
lights to ensure violations are captured with the
appropriate speed limit.
"We applaud Mesa's decision to install fixed-site
speed cameras near Rhodes Jr. High School. The
cameras will improve public safety, particularly for
those kids who walk to and from school," said Jim
Tuton, President and CEO of American Traffic
Solutions. Tuton also stated, "The use of fixed-site
speed cameras at school zones will be the first of
its kind in the State of Arizona, and this sends a
clear message that Mesa has zero tolerance for
school zone speeding, which puts children and the
community at risk."
The fixed-site speed camera at Rhodes Junior High
School is the only planned location for this type of
photo enforcement.
