Mesa Police Department - Media Release

Tripod traffic testing begins in Mesa

The Mesa Police Department and American Traffic Solutions, Inc. (ATS) will soon begin a speed enforcement testing process in pre-selected school zones throughout the city.

The technology includes a tripod and camera that has the ability to assess speed in smaller school zone areas where larger types of traffic enforcement is challenging to police. Mesa Police and ATS have agreed to this testing process only to target the school zones when the 15 miles-per-hour movable signs are in the roadway during school hours.

During the duration of the testing process at the pre-selected areas, no warnings and/or citations will be issued. Vehicles going 6 miles over the posted speed limit of 15 miles per hour will trigger the camera. This is strictly a testing process that has been agreed to by Mesa Police and ATS.

The testing will begin on Thursday, May 8, 2008. The first school zone will begin at University and Westwood, then continue north to Westwood and 6th Street. The second school zone will be at Longmore and 7th Street. The duration of the testing period is unknown at this time. It will be continuously re-evaluated as the technology is under development.
