Mesa Police Department Missing Persons
Instructions for Obtaining a DNA Sample Using Oral Swabs
This procedure allows for the collection of DNA
from a known sample to be dried and stored should the need arise in the future
to compare the sample.
Items needed for this procedure:
-
One clean cotton swab per sample (person)
-
Clean rubber or Latex gloves (optional)
-
Clean paper envelope
-
One clean sheet of waxed or plain paper for
each sample
-
Marker pen
Step 1
For each sample take a clean sheet of paper and
write the name of the person to be sampled on it. Place the paper on a level
surface in a clean, dry place.
Step 2
Put on rubber or Latex gloves and remove clean, unused cotton
swab from package.
Step 3
Have the sample subject (the person you are obtaining the DNA
sample from) open their mouth wide enough to insert the cotton swab inside their
mouth. Rub the cotton swab up and down on the interior of their cheek area.
Remove the swab.
Step 4
Place the swab from the sample subject on the sheet of paper with
the subject's name on it. Allow to air dry for at least 2 hours.
Step 5
Label the clean envelope with the sample subject's name and other
pertinent information. Place the dried cotton swab inside the envelope, seal it
with scotch tape (DO NOT LICK THE ENVELOPE) and place it in an area that is dry
and accessible in case of an emergency.
Do not use these instructions for other kits
or methods. If you purchase a commercially available kit, follow the
instructions that came with that kit.
