Main Street Revitalization Effort
In 1998, the City of Mesa began an aggressive Main Street
revitalization program. The first step in this process was a $20 million
streetscape improvement project. The project's priority was to develop a
pedestrian-friendly environment by widening the sidewalks, installing
decorative pavers, historic street lighting, street furniture and abundant
landscaping. The first phase of this beautification project was Main
Street from Country Club to Lewis Street and Macdonald and Robson Streets
from 1st Avenue to Pepper Place. Subsequent phases included Macdonald and
Robson Streets from Pepper Place to 1st Street, Main Street from Lewis
Street to Mesa Drive, and Center Street from Main Street to 1st
Avenue.

The success of any Main
Street revitalization is hinged upon creating a pedestrian-friendly
atmosphere that is beautiful and exciting.
Creating a pedestrian-friendly
atmosphere is only the first step in a continuous effort to revitalize a
downtown. In addition, the Town Center Development Division is partnering with other
resources to identify and attract high-quality retail and commercial
businesses and development to Downtown Mesa. In addition, the newly
commissioned Mesa Arts Center (SEC of Main Street and Center
Street) will provide an additional anchor to our downtown.
