What
is VITA?
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is an IRS program that trains volunteers to
help prepare basic tax returns for those with low to moderate income,
individuals with disabilities, and the elderly
taxpayers.
What kind of experience is needed to become a
volunteer?
Only the spirit of volunteerism! No other experience is required.
How long does the E-Training last and when
will it be available-Training should take approximately 24 hours (work at your own pace) but
will require you to complete the comprehensive coursework during one of the
classroom sessions.
What kind of training will I receive?
Free basic income tax law for federal and state such as Forms 1040, and 1040EZ and
related schedules such as A, B, and C-EZ.
When will I begin assisting tax payers and
how many hours do I need to work?
VITA sites are open February 5 thru April 9 (Mesa Community Action Network
by appointment only). The IRS is asking Mesa volunteers for a 20 hour
commitment.
Can I receive CEUs?
Yes. CPA's can receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
Training and the volunteer's hours will be tracked and training certificates will
be issued to the volunteers at the end of the session.
Are bilingual volunteers needed?
Yes. Bilingual assistance is greatly needed. We need bilingual assistance in
Spanish,
Chinese and various East Indian dialects.
What difference will I make?
You will assist low income families and individuals by helping them to claim
every tax benefit that they're entitled to. You can help boost a
family's yearly income by up to 30%.
How can I pick a site?
You can sign up to participate at a site in the community of your choice and
select a time that best fits your schedule.
